Many parts of Alabama still dealing with icy, impassable roads

Drivers in many parts of North Alabama are still dealing with icy roads as overnight temperatures once again dipped below freezing.

Hazardous conditions on Wednesday prompted Huntsville police to warn drivers to stay off the roadways due to the large number of crashes being reported.

And there’s more winter weather to come. Light freezing rain will be possible in parts of Alabama today, according to the National Weather Service, and another blast of arctic air is expected to follow today’s weather system.

A hard freeze warning was issued by the National Weather Service on Thursday from Friday 8 p.m. until Saturday noon for several Alabama counties in North and Central Alabama.

Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division have received reports of icy roadway conditions with the following counties.

Limestone County

  • U.S. 72, U.S. 31, Alabama 127 at Alabama 199 and Alabama 251 have reports of icy road conditions, including county roads.

Morgan County

  • U.S. 31, Alabama 36 and county roads reportedly have icy conditions.

Cullman County

  • Most roadways have icy conditions. Interstate 65 from the 310 mile marker south is clear, while Alabama 69 South at County Road 8 is being treated by ALDOT.

Blount County

  • All roadways have treacherous icy conditions.

Madison County

  • Alabama 53, U.S. 231, U.S. 72 and northern county roads have icy conditions.

The Impassable travel advisory remains in effect for all county roads until further notice. Portions of state routes are beginning to look better as ALDOT continues to treat and plow these roadways.

Franklin County

  • Russellville police report municipal roads are very icy. Two-wheel drive vehicles will have a very hard time. Four-wheel drive vehicles will still have some trouble, as all vehicles have a hard time stopping. U.S. 43 and Alabama 24 are in better condition than the municipal roads, but you still have to exercise caution and adjust your speeds and braking/following distances.
