Many North Alabama roads remain impassable with ice, officials say
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is urging drivers to once again exercise caution throughout the counties of North Alabama following another round of arctic air.
Many counties, still choked with ice and snow, refroze Thursday following another round of precipitation.
As of Friday morning, ALEA says these counties are reporting ice and snow on roadways throughout them, with county roads deemed impassable:
• Lauderdale, Lawrence County, Franklin, Colbert, Marion, Winston, Lamar, Fayette and Walker counties.
In other counties, specific roads pose potential threats.
Limestone County
- Icy conditions are present on U.S. 72, U.S. 31, Alabama 27 at Alabama 99 and Alabama 251, while county roads have mostly icy conditions.
Morgan County
- U.S. 31, Alabama 36 and county roads have icy conditions.
Cullman County
- Most roadways are icy. I-65 has improved and is passable with the exception of isolated icy patches.
Blount County
- All roadways are icy. Most county roads are passable, however isolated roads are still deemed impassable.
Madison County
- Alabama 53, U.S. 231 and U.S. 72 have icy conditions. County roads in the northern part of county are deemed impassable.
Marshall County
- Most roadways are icy.
Jackson County
- Alabama 79 and U.S. 72 have icy conditions, with county roads deemed impassable. Alabama 117 is closed from the 45 Mile Marker to the Tennessee state line. ALDOT is treating US.. 72 at the Madison/Jackson line with salt
