Man’s death in Foley jail cell under investigation
A 39-year-old man arrested in Elberta on a misdemeanor warrant was found dead in his cell at the Foley Municipal Jail Monday morning.
According to a release from the Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit, which is investigating the death, Christopher R. Myers was arrested Sunday by a Baldwin County deputy.
He was taken into custody on a failure to appear warrant out of Elberta.
He was transported to the Foley jail, which has a contract to house Elberta prisoners.
Myers was deemed intoxicated when he was booked and could not be released until sober, according to jail policy.
Jail personnel had contact with Myers several times through the day Sunday and again checked on him around 5 a.m. Monday morning.
But roughly two hours later, just before 7 a.m., Myers was found unresponsive as jail staff conducted a security check prior to serving inmates’ breakfast.
Jail personnel rendered aid until paramedics arrived, but ultimately Myers was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the release, there were no obvious signs of suicide or other trauma.
An autopsy will be conducted at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Mobile.
Once the investigation is complete, all information will be turned over to the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office, which will present the case to a grand jury.
