Manâs body recovered from east Alabama river after nearly 20-hour search
The search for a man who was seen reportedly jumping into the Coosa River in Gadsden ended Thursday morning with the recovery of his body.
Dispatchers received a call at 1:01 p.m. Wednesday of a man in the water who did not surface at the Gadsden City Docks – the boardwalk located along Albert Rains Boulevard across from Moragne Park, said Michael Rodgers, City of Gadsden public affairs coordinator.
The first units arrived on the scene at 1:05 p.m., and first responders were in the water within seconds of arriving.
The Gadsden Fire Department and several surrounding fire departments are conducting the search operations, along with the Gadsden Police Department, Etowah County Sheriff’s Office, the State of Alabama Marine Police and Gadsden-Etowah EMA.
At 9:49 a.m., first responders located a body matching the description of the drowning victim in the search area near the Gadsden City Docks and boardwalk along Albert Rains Boulevard, Rodgers said.
The victim’s identity has not been released pending notification of family.
The recovery ended more than 20 hours of searching the river by more than a dozen agencies from Etowah County and around the state.
“We want to thank all the agencies that assisted us and offered assistance in this search,” said Gadsden Fire Chief Wil Reed.
