Man who died in Jefferson County woods after running from crash scene identified

Authorities have released the name of a man found dead Thursday, two days after he ran away from paramedics who were treating him after a car wreck.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the man Tommie Denarvise Franklin. He was 33 and lived in Birmingham.

Authorities said Franklin was involved in a single-car wreck about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 100 block of Carson Road and Elfreth Johnson Road.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies were investigating the accident, while the man was being treated by medical personnel, said Lt. Joni Money.

For unknown reasons, she said, Franklin fled from the scene and could not be found.

Friends and family had been circulating his photos on Facebook saying they were looking for him, and reported him missing on Tuesday.

On Thursday, his loved ones were out searching for Franklin when they discovered his body in a wooded area behind a business.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said Franklin was officially pronounced dead at 11:59 a.m. Thursday. He said an autopsy will be performed today to try to determine his cause of death.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding both the wreck and death.
