Man wanted on federal machine gun and drug charges arrested by U.S. Marshals after standoff at Bessemer home
A fugitive wanted on federal gun and drug charges is in custody after a two-hour standoff with the U.S. Marshals and Bessemer police.
Tahji Alonzo Orr, a 24-year-old Bessemer man, was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force on Wednesday. Orr was indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2022 on charges of possession with intent to distribute heroin, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, using a machine gun in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense and possession of a machine gun.
Authorities have been searching for Orr since the indictment was issued.
On Wednesday, said U.S. Marshal Marty Keely, deputy marshals identified Orr as he was exiting a residence on Fox Hollies Boulevard in Bessemer.
Orr, Keely said, walked to a vehicle occupied by three other people and spoke with them for a few moments. He then attempted to get into another vehicle.
As authorities approached him, Orr quickly exited the vehicle and ran back into the residence. He took with him a long backpack.
Deputy marshals and Bessemer police quickly set up a perimeter and surrounded the home. A tactical team from the Bessemer Police Department was on standby.
Deputy marshals made verbal contact with Orr to negotiate a surrender, Keely said.
About two hours later, Orr surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident. He is being held in the Hoover City Jail, which is one of the area jails that houses federal inmates.
Orr was arrested by Hoover police last year on state charges of trafficking fentanyl.
The three people in the vehicle Orr initially approached were arrested for being in possession of narcotics and a fully-automatic machine gun.
