Man wanted in Florida, Georgia crashes in Alabama high-speed chase, injuring another driver
A man wanted in Florida and Georgia for felony domestic violence and other charges was arrested after a high-speed chase in two north Alabama counties Monday.
Marshall County Sheriff Phil Sims said the incident happened on U.S. 431 North near Keller Shell.
A deputy observed a white BMW traveling at a high rate of speed, passing two trucks on the road’s shoulder and almost striking one of them, Sims said.
The deputy began a pursuit that continued into Madison County before the vehicle executed a U-turn in New Hope and re-entered Marshall County.
The pursuit reached speeds of more than 100 m.p.h. at times, Sims said.
Guntersville Police deployed spike strips near the state highway department offices, but they were unsuccessful.
Police joined in the pursuit as it continued over the Tennessee River bridge. When the BMW approached the Alabama 69 intersection, the driver attempted to turn right and lost control, striking another vehicle turning onto U.S. 431 South, Sims said.
After the vehicle came to a stop, the subject in the BMW was taken into custody and transported to Huntsville Hospital due to his injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to Marshall Medical North and later released.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is investigating the crash.
Robert Lanning, 28, of Melbourne, Fla., was identified as the driver of the BMW. Sims said Lanning is wanted on a felony probation violation warrant out of Georgia, related to a felony family domestic violence conviction. He is also wanted out of Georgia and Florida for other charges.
He is being charged with felony attempting to elude, a probation violation from Georgia, and numerous traffic offenses. He still remains under guard in the hospital with no bond, Sims said.
Additional charges may be forthcoming. Guntersville Police, Guntersville Fire and State Troopers assisted in the case.
“This individual did not have any regard for anyone on the road, only that he did not want to go to jail on felony warrants stemming from felony domestic violence conviction in Georgia or any other charges,” Sims said.
“After the fact, we were made aware the suspect has a history of violent tendencies toward law enforcement officers. We will work closely with the DA’s office to make sure this individual is held accountable for the terrible decision he made yesterday.”
