A large police presence is visible around an area near UAB Medical West in Bessemer where an armed man is threatening suicide.

Bessemer police Det. Justin Burmeister said police responded to the hospital on Ninth Avenue S.W. about 1 p.m. Saturday.

An adult male is in the parking lot of doctors’ offices behind the hospital. The man does have a weapon but has not fired any shots.

Roughly 20 police officers are at the location. Officers are in communication with the man.

Reports of an active shooter at the hospital are not true, Burmeister said.
