Man sought in Fultondale shooting that injured his 4-year-old sister in custody, held without bond

The older brother of a 4-year-old girl shot in Fultondale last week is now in custody.

Jaylen Lewis, 21, is charged with second-degree assault and unlawful possession of marijuana.

He surrendered to Fultondale police and was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Monday evening.

Lewis is being held without bond after the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office successfully sought to revoke his bond on a previous robbery charge. Prosecutors filed the revocation motion following last week’s shooting, and a judge granted the request.

Police and fire medics were dispatched shortly after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, to Chapel Creek Apartments on a report of a child shot.

Police Chief Marcel Walker said when officers arrived, the little girl’s mother was applying pressure to the child’s leg wound. The bullet had gone in and out of the girl’s leg.

The child was taken to Children’s of Alabama. Walker said her injuries weren’t life-threatening.

The mother told police the girl was in a room and accidentally shot herself, Walker said.

Three people were at the home when police arrived. A fourth – Lewis – had left before officers got on the scene, the chief said.

Officers found marijuana in the room Lewis shared with his little sister.

Police officials said the girl was shot “due to the reckless actions” of her brother.
