Man slain outside small business in Birmingham’s 5th homicide in 24 hours

A man was found slain Sunday morning outside a small business off Bessemer Super Highway in Birmingham’s fifth homicide in 24 hours.

A passerby made the discovery shortly after 10 a.m. at 6233 Blocton Ave., an area in Birmingham near Bessemer, Brighton, Midfield and Lipscomb.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said officers received a call of a person down outside a place that appears to be a restaurant or a club. The name on the door says El Rincon, but it was immediately clear if that is the current name.

The victim, who has not yet been identified, sustained obvious trauma, but Fitzgerald said it was too soon to tell if he had been shot, stabbed or beaten.

He was near walkway near the entrance to the business.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.

“We believe someone who was driving by saw the victim lying unresponsive and called 911,’’ Fitzgerald said.

No arrests have been made in the latest Birmingham homicide of the weekend.

On Saturday afternoon, a man was shot to death on Fourth Avenue West in the Bush Hills community. Later that night, another man was found fatally shot on Vassar Avenue on the east side.

On Sunday morning, two men were gunned down on Boise Avenue.

In all, 10 people have been killed in nine days.

There have been 29 homicides so far this year in Birmingham. Of those, three have been ruled justifiable.

In all of Jefferson County there have been 36 slayings, including the 29 in Birmingham.
