A man was killed early Sunday in Birmingham.

The shooting happened at approximately 1:30 a.m., according to Birmingham police Officer Truman Fitzgerald. West Precinct officers responded to a house in the 1900 Block of 28th Street Ensley on report of a person shot and, upon arrival, found a man unresponsive inside the house suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

The victim has been identified as Kenneth Dewayne Maddox Jr.. He was 35 and lived in Birmingham.

Maddox was taken to Princeton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police’s initial investigation shows that Maddox had been in an argument with another person inside the home when he was shot, Fitzgerald said. The suspect is believed to have fled the scene on foot. There is no one currently in custody.

The victim is the city’s 115th homicide this year. Of those, seven have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 155 homicides, including the 115 in Birmingham.
