Man shot to death by Alabama deputies now identified
Authorities have identified the man shot to death on Tuesday by deputies in Jackson County.
Sheriff Rocky Harnen said Cameron Tolbert, 30, of Pisgah, was the man shot at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at a home on County Road 88 in Pisgah.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the shooting.
According to the sheriff’s office, a deputy went to the home to interview Tolbert about a weeks-old homicide. He was not a suspect but was wanted for questioning as a witness.
“We’ve already arrested a suspect,” he said. “He was just a neighbor.”
Tolbert reportedly came out of the house brandishing a rifle and the deputy went to his car, calling for backup.
Tolbert went inside the home, staying for about 20 minutes, as other deputies arrived. Tolbert then came out and fired a round at the deputies, who returned fire, killing him.
No deputies were injured.
Two deputies, who have not been identified, are on administrative leave, per departmental policy, Harnen said.
