Man shot, ‘mutilated’ with chainsaw by girlfriend, Alabama court records state
A man who was allegedly killed by his partner in southeast Alabama was “mutilated into multiple pieces” with a chainsaw and was shot, according to a law enforcement official who testified Wednesday at a bond hearing in Geneva County Circuit Court.
As a result of the testimony, Joselina Lopez was denied bond on a charge of intentional murder in the slaying of Benito Morales Guzman in Geneva County, court records showed.
Guzman’s boss reported him missing last week, prompting authorities to visit his home he shared with Lopez in Fadette on Aug. 27.
Officers noticed a “strong odor of decomposition” they believed came from a Toyota Corolla and noticed several garbage bags at the back of the vehicle, testified Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Special Agent Phillip Schuler.
ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation is probing Guzman’s death.
Officers searched the Corolla and found “a body believed to be that of Benita Morales Guzman, mutilated into multiple pieces and spread out in 10 to 15 garbage bags in the back seat and trunk of the Corolla along with an electric chainsaw, knives and cleaning supplies,” records showed.
A gun was found in the house and five of the six cartridges were fired from the revolver. Two bullets were removed from Guzman’s body.
Authorities discovered Lopez bought four electric chainsaws, returning one of them to the hardware store she purchased them from.
“The chainsaw found in the vehicle still had human flesh on it,” records stated.
Authorities appeared to suggest that Lopez intended to flee; in another vehicle on the property, authorities found a car seat for a child that had been at the house with Lopez when authorities were there, a packed diaper bag, the child’s birth certificate and Lopez’s passport.
“Further, blood was found on the box of baby formula in the diaper bag,” court records said.
Lopez’s bond hearing revealed she has relatives in Mexico and Guatemala. In a recording made when Lopez was in the Geneva County jail, she allegedly told a relative “I should have left earlier.”
Geneva County District Court Judge Stephen Smith said several facts of the case led him to deny bond for Lopez.
