Man shot in food court at Western Hills Mall
A man was shot inside the Western Hills Mall in Fairfield on Sunday evening, the authorities said.
The shooting happened in the food court at about 5 p.m., said Henry Irby, spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Video posted to social media showed someone performing CPR on the man.
Irby said the man was in critical condition when he was taken to UAB Hospital for treatment, but deputies haven’t released any further updates about his condition.
Police are searching for a suspect in west Birmingham and have set up a perimeter there.
Eddie Penny, the mayor of Fairfield, said he’s still gathering information and declined to comment further.
There have been other shootings at the Western Hills Mall in recent years.
In 2023, a 16-year-old boy was killed in hail of gunfire by three masked suspects outside the mall, police said at the time.
In 2020, a man was shot in the parking lot.
In 2018 a manager at the mall was shot and died on a sidewalk. The manager, 59-year-old Anthony Alberigi, was an innocent bystander who got caught in crossfire between two groups of young men, police said at the time.
