A man was shot Saturday during a physical altercation with Shelby County sheriff’s deputies.

Deputies were dispatched at 11:29 a.m. Saturday to a domestic dispute on Brandy Circle in Chelsea.

Authorities said while on the scene, they encountered the armed man.

“During a physical altercation the suspect received a gunshot wound to the lower extremities,’’ according to a news release.

The suspect was transported to an undisclosed Birmingham-area hospital. His injuries were not initially believed to be life-threatening.

Sheriff John Samaniego requested the Shelby County Major Crimes Task Force, under the direction of the District Attorney’s Office, to lead the investigation.
