Man shot dead while riding his bicycle on east Birmingham street

A man was shot dead while riding his bicycle early Tuesday on an east Birmingham street.

East Precinct officers were dispatched at 4:16 a.m. to the 7000 block of First Avenue South after Shot Spotter, the city’s gunfire detection system, indicated multiple rounds fired in that area.

Once on the scene, officers found the victim unresponsive in the road.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service transported the man to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

Investigators believe the victim was riding his bike when the gunman approached him and opened fire.

“Right now, this incident does not appear to be random,’’ Fitzgerald said.

The fatal shooting is one of two that happened in Birmingham in less than 12 hours.

Just after 8 p.m. Monday, a man was found shot to death inside a vehicle in an Inglenook alley.

So far this year, there have been 83 homicides in Birmingham. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and seven others have been rule justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 115 homicides, including the 83 in Birmingham.

No arrests have been announced in either slaying.
