An early morning shooting in northern Jefferson County left one man dead.

Fultondale police responded at 3 a.m. Saturday to the Shell station in the 600 block of Decatur Highway, just off Interstate 65.

They arrived to find an adult male with a gunshot wound to the chest. Fultondale medics pronounced him dead on the scene.

His name is being withheld pending the notification of his family.

Investigators said the suspected shooter – a woman – fled the scene before police arrived. The shooting is believed to be domestic related.

Police said the shooting was an isolated incident at that the suspect and victim did not live in Fultondale.

The victim is the city’s first homicide in 2023. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 39 slayings including the one in Fultondale.
