Man shot dead in southwest Birmingham neighborhood

An investigation is underway after a fatal shooting Friday afternoon in southwest Birmingham.

Birmingham police were dispatched at 2:57 p.m. to the 2300 block of Steiner Avenue after the city’s gunfire detection system – Shot Spotter – indicated shots fired in the area.

When police arrived on the scene, they found a male suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

The victim, whose identity hasn’t been released, was rushed to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The victim is the city’s 36th homicide in 2023. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside agency and three others have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 48 homicides including the 36 in Birmingham.
