Man shot dead in possible running gun battle near busy Birmingham road
A man was killed during an apparent running gun battle on Birmingham’s east side Saturday afternoon.
Just before 4 p.m., east precinct officers received a call about a shootout near the Shell gas station on East Lake Boulevard, just off I-50/20. That shootout was happening between two different vehicles, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
Police were en route to that call when they were updated that there was an additional shooting taking place in the 3400 block of 38th Place North.
Someone called into report a man shot inside a vehicle at a residence. He was unresponsive and pronounced dead on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.
Investigators said 10 to 20 shots were fired in the incident.
Fitzgerald said the preliminary investigation shows there was a shooting in the roadway and the victim was struck while he was in the vehicle.
Several houses were also struck.
“Thankfully we do not have anyone additionally injured,’’ Fitzgerald said.
No arrests have been made.
“We believe the victim was targeted based on the evidence at the scene,’’ Fitzgerald said. “We need the community’s help.”
Family members of the victim were at the crime scene.
“It’s difficult because that’s the part of the scene you never get used to,’’ he said. “It’s said the family members of a homicide victim have to find out over the phone that they have lost a loved one.”
The victim is the city’s 124th homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and eight more have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 174 homicides, including the 124 in Birmingham.
