Man shot dead during suspected Birmingham carjacking is city’s 1st homicide of 2024

A man was shot to death Saturday evening in an east Birmingham neighborhood during a possible carjacking.

East Precinct officers were dispatched at 5:05 p.m. to a report of a person shot at a home in the 8400 block of Seventh Avenue South.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said officers entered the house and found the victim inside with a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced the man dead on the scene.

The investigation shows a vehicle was taken during the incident. Police were actively searching for that vehicle.

Fitzgerald said there were others at the home when the shooting happened, but no one else was injured.

It wasn’t immediately clear where the victim was when he was shot, but he was able to make it inside before collapsing.

No suspects are in custody.

Six days into the new year, the man became the city’s first homicide of 2024.

The city’s first homicide last year happened on Jan. 2. There had been two homicides by this time last year.

In 2022, first slaying happened on Jan. 1, and was one of two to happen on that New Year’s Day. By Jan. 6, 2022, there had already been four homicides.

Birmingham ended 2023 with 135 homicides, a 6.25% decrease from 2022 when the city had 144 homicides, marking the deadliest year in recent Birmingham history.
