Man shot by Decatur police at pharmacy released from hospital, arrested

Decatur police say a man who was shot by police earlier this month has been released from Huntsville Hospital.

Twanski O’Neal Johnson, 26, of Tuscaloosa, was released from Huntsville Hospital last night.

He was then transported to the Morgan County Jail where he was charged with second degree assault, attempt to disarm a law enforcement officer, and attempting to commit a controlled substance crime. Johnson will be held in lieu of a $21,000 bond.

Upon his release, Johnson will be turned over to Tuscaloosa police for an outstanding warrant for first degree robbery.

Johnson was shot during an altercation with police on Oct. 4.

According to Decatur police, at about 12:56 p.m., a Decatur police officer responded to a call for service at Westmeade Pharmacy, located at 2104 Danville Rd. S.W., in response to a report of a person attempting to commit a drug crime.

The responding officer arrived and came into contact with Johnson, who police say became “aggressive and violent, assaulting the officer.”

During the incident, the officer shot Johnson once in the torso. Johnson was later transported to Huntsville Hospital.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was treated and released from a local hospital for injuries received during the altercation, police said. The officer was placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).
