Man shot by Decatur officer was ‘aggressive and violent,’ police say

The man shot Tuesday afternoon by Decatur police was “aggressive and violent” and assaulted the officer before the shots were fired, the department said Tuesday night.

Decatur police identified the suspect as 26-year-old Tuscaloosa resident Twanski O’Neal Johnson, and said he was taken to Huntsville Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition as of Tuesday night.

Police said Johnson was “attempting to commit a controlled substance crime” when a Decatur officer arrived on the scene around 12:56 p.m. Tuesday at Westmeade Pharmacy at 2104 Danville Rd. SW.

“The responding officer arrived and came into contact with the subject. … Johnson became aggressive and violent, assaulting the officer. During the course of the assault, the responding officer discharged his service weapon, striking Johnson one time in the torso,” the department said.

The officer called for assistance, and other officers and EMS responded to provide first aid to Johnson.

The officer who fired the shots was injured during the assault, police said, and he was treated and released from a local hospital.

As is standard when police fire their weapons, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is conducting the investigation into the incident.

In line with the department’s police, the officer was put on administrative leave. His name was not publicly released.

Police obtained warrants for Johnson’s arrest for attempt to commit a controlled substance crime, attempt to disarm a law enforcement officer and second-degree assault.

Additional charges against Johnson are pending, police said.
