Man shoots his way into Birmingham assisted living facility, hides in ceiling; standoff ends without injury

A man is in custody after police said he shot his way into a Birmingham assisted living facility on the city’s Southside Tuesday morning.

Birmingham police were dispatched to a report of an active shooter at Episcopal Place at 1112 26th Street in Southside.

Episcopal Place is a nonprofit that provides affordable housing for seniors and adults with disabilities.

Birmingham police received the first call at 7:52 a.m. The suspect was taken into custody shortly after 8:30 a.m.

No one was injured in the shooting.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said South Precinct officers arrived on the scene and found the suspect – a middle-aged man – had “violently” entered the facility by shooting his way inside. He entered the building through a back, locked entrance.

“To gain access he shot the windows out and was able to enter,’’ he said, “as we’ve seen in several scenarios across the nation.”

As officers approached the suspect, they heard more shots fired, he said. They saw damage to the a ceiling on the first floor of the apartment building at which point they determined he was in the ceiling.

“Our officers were able to maintain a line of communication,’’ Fitzgerald said. “The dispatcher placed an emergency radio traffic alert to get all available officers here.”

Officers continued to communicate with the suspect as more officers were deployed into the facility.

Fitzgerald said the officers were able to convince the suspect into surrendering in the building’s library.

The suspect was taken to Birmingham police headquarters for questioning. A motive has not yet been disclosed, but Fitzgerald confirmed police radio communications that the suspect possibly has a history of mental issues.

The entire incident took place on the first floor of the eight-story building. Police were about to prepare to evacuate residents when the suspect was taken into custody.

Fitzgerald said at least 10 shots were fired during the ordeal.

“We can’t say for certain he fired shots at our officers,’’ he said, “but we know once our officers were on the scene, he did discharge his firearm.”

The man, police said, was armed with a handgun.

“A very violent situation ended peacefully thanks to our officers and the staff at Episcopal Place,’’ he said.

“Regardless of the motive,’’ Fitzgerald said, “this situation could have been horrible.”
