Man serving life for infant daughter’s 2013 death dies in Donaldson Correctional Facility

A man convicted in the 2013 abuse death of his infant daughter has died in prison.

Eric Rotray Payne, 31, died Tuesday at William Donaldson Correctional Facility in western Jefferson County, according to the coroner’s office.

Payne was found unresponsive at 12 a.m. Tuesday in an open bay style dorm, said Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 12:39 a.m.

Yates said an autopsy showed no evidence of trauma or foul play. His cause of death is pending further laboratory studies.

Payne was convicted of murder in the death of his 8-month-old daughter, Jaliah. He was convicted in 2015 and sentenced to life in prison.

Payne is the 29th Donaldson inmate to die this year. In 2022, 40 inmates died at the prison.
