Man left 4 puppies in hot car while he dined at Disney; one died, charges possible
One dog died and three others had to be rescued by first responders after a man left them in a hot car while he dined at Disney Springs in Orlando, according to Orange County (Fla.) Animal Services.
Officers were called to a parking garage at Disney Springs — a popular dining and entertainment district within Walt Disney World — last Saturday after a security guard patrolling the parking garage spotted the four dogs “in distress” inside the car.
The dogs were identified by the Orlando Sentinel as 13-week-old Bernedoodle puppies, a mix of Bernese mountain dog and poodle.
First responders arrived and found one of the puppies unresponsive. Despite efforts of a local emergency veterinary clinic, it could not be revived and had to be euthanized.
Firefighters from the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Fire Department ran IV lines, provided oxygen and applied cooling packs to the other three puppies, all of whom are reportedly doing well and have each been adopted by one of the firefighters who saved them.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is reviewing the case to determine if charges will be brought against the dogs’ now-former owner, who had recently purchased the puppies from a breeder. He had left the dogs in the parking garage with a window cracked open, assuming they’d be OK, according to the Sentinel report.
The Sentinel also reported investigators believe there is probable cause for felony animal cruelty charges.
Orange County Animal Services said in a release that, despite its best efforts to educate the public, tragic incidents such as this one occur every year.
“We at OCAS just ask our community to please remember that they are more than just pets. They are more than possessions. To remember that they need us, more than we need them. And that most of the time, they cannot survive without us.
“We shouldn’t put these gentle hearts at risk. Please, keep them safe. Keep them home.”
