Man leads Birmingham police on chase in stolen ATV before crashing into church fence

A man is in custody after leading Birmingham police on a chase in a stolen ATV.

The chase started about 1:30 p.m. when South Precinct officers, who had been made aware of the theft, spotted the ATV. It ended when the suspect crashed through a chain link fence at the Woodlawn Community Church of God and disabled the ATV.

The ATV broke down in the middle of the 4400 block of Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard North. The suspect then ran away on foot but was quickly captured in a nearby back yard.

The pursuit lasted at least 20 minutes. No one was injured.

The owner of the ATV said it was stolen overnight from a construction project at Woodlawn High School. He said they discovered it missing when they arrived at work Monday morning to find a broken fence and the vehicle gone.

He said he was tracking the ATV and was out looking for it when he got a phone call that it had been recovered. The owner still had the key with him.
