Man killed outside Ensley store is Birminghamâs 2nd homicide in 10 hours
A man was shot to death in broad daylight Saturday outside a neighborhood store in Ensley.
The deadly shooting was Birmingham’s second in less than 12 hours.
West Precinct officers were dispatched about 1:30 p.m. to the 1700 block of Avenue I which is outside M&A Grocery.
Officers arrived to find the victim unresponsive inside a vehicle. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead at the scene.
Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said the city’s gunfire detection system – Shot Spotter – alerted police to at least six rounds fired in that area.
As police were heading to the location, 911 received multiple calls from citizens reporting a person had been shot.
Investigators believe some type of altercation took place before the unknown suspect fired the fatal shots.
No one is in custody.

Just before 3 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to a Shot Spotter alert of gunfire at Avenue W and 18th Street in Ensley. While they were en route, the call was updated to report a man lying in the roadway.
He, too, was pronounced dead on the scene.
Wade said at least nine shots were fired in the predawn shooting.
Saturday afternoon’s victim is Birmingham’s 120th confirmed homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency, and eight others have been ruled justifiable.
In all of Jefferson County there have been 166 homicides, including the 120 in Birmingham.
