Man killed near east Birmingham dice game lost two brothers in fatal shootings

Authorities have released the name of a man fatally shot in East Lake Monday night.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office Tuesday identified the victim as Kameron Connell. He was 30 and lived in Birmingham.

Connell’s brother, Keleen Connell, was shot to death by Birmingham police on Feb. 23, 2022. Another brother, Kerry Connell, 18, was fatally shot in 2011 in the parking lot of a convenience store at 36 South Park Road.

East Precinct Officers were dispatched just after 8 p.m. to a report of a person shot in the parking lot of an apartment building in the 7700 block of First Avenue South.

Officers arrived to find Connell unresponsive.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service rushed the victim to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:37 p.m.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said Connell was found near where people were hanging out and shooting dice.

“We don’t know if the shooting is connected to the dice game,’’ Fitzgerald said. “However, we can point out when our officers observed the victim he was in an area where dice is still on the ground.”

No arrests have been announced. Fitzgerald said the participants in the dice game were reluctant to talk to police.

Connell is Birmingham’s 76th homicide this year. Of those, eight have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 99 homicides, including the 76 in Birmingham.

Homicides in Birmingham and countywide were up in the first six months of this year, including a 15 percent increase in Birmingham alone.

Anyone with information on the incident was asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
