Man killed in weekend Birmingham shooting now identified
Authorities have released the name of a man killed in a weekend Birmingham shooting.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Richard Lavar Edwards Jr. He was 44 and lived in Birmingham.
West Precinct officers were dispatched at 2:15 a.m. Sunday to a report of shots fired on Holt Avenue in the Pratt community.
They arrived to find Edwards unresponsive in the yard of a home. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene at 2:38 a.m.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said a community member heard the shots and called 911.
No arrests have been announced.
Edwards is Birmingham’s 43rd homicide this year. Of those, four have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 62 homicides including the 43 in Birmingham.
