Man killed in Tuscaloosa shooting; suspect jailed after surrendering at police headquarters

A shooting in Tuscaloosa left one man dead and another in jail.

Tuscaloosa police were dispatched at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to reports of a shooting in the 1800 block of Queen City Avenue. They arrived to find a wrecked car two blocks away with a man inside who had been shot multiple times, said Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Marty Sellers.

The victim, 37-year-old Rufus Tyrone Carter IV, was taken to the DCH Regional Medical Center. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

While investigators were arriving at the scene, 36-year-old Reginal Dawayne Peoples walked up to the front desk at police headquarters and said he had just shot someone.

Sellers said detectives questioned Peoples, spoke with witnesses, and processed evidence at the scene. When they were done, they charged Peoples with murder.

Peoples is being held without bond in the Tuscaloosa County Jail.
