Man killed in overnight assault in Birmingham’s Huffman community

An investigation is underway after a man was killed late Saturday in Birmingham’s Huffman community.

East Precinct officers were dispatched just before midnight to a report of a person shot in the 1400 block of Lake Lane N.E.

Officers arrived to find the victim injured from an unknown type of assault, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced the man dead on the scene.

Fitzgerald said investigators believe the victim was assaulted at a home in that neighborhood. He was then able to leave the house and seek help from nearby residents.

The suspect remains at large. Fitzgerald said they don’t believe the assault was random.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine how the victim was killed.

The victim is Birmingham’s 133rd homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and nine others have been ruled justified.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 188 homicides, including the 133 in Birmingham.

Anyone with information is asked to call homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
