Man killed in domestic shooting outside Birmingham paper supply company

A man was shot to death Sunday afternoon outside a west Birmingham paper and packing supply company where the victim is believed to have worked.

West Precinct officers responded just before 5:30 p.m. to the 2700 block of Republic Boulevard on a report of a person shot.

Police arrived in the parking lot of Athens Paper to find the victim unresponsive. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said investigators believe a domestic altercation took place in the parking lot which led to the fatal said.

“This case is confidential,’’ Wade said. “There are a lot of questions I cannot answer at this time.”

Wade said she could not say whether a suspect is in custody. She said detectives are interviewing multiple witnesses.

Friends and family of the victim gathered at the crime scene, visibly upset.

The man is the city’s 66th homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and five others have been ruled justifiable and therefore are not deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County there have been 97 homicides including the 66 in Birmingham.
