Man killed in brazen Friday shooting outside busy Five Points West food mart
A man was killed in broad daylight outside a busy Five Points West convenience store Friday afternoon, Birmingham police said.
West Precinct officers responded to the 5 Points West Food Mart at 2258 Bessemer Rd. around 3:22 p.m. Friday on a call of a person shot, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
Several Shot Spotter alerts, which indicate when gunfire may have erupted at a scene, were also activated, Fitzgerald said.
Outside the convenience store, police found an unresponsive man in the parking lot suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene.
“We believe that a suspect came to the location, shot the victim and then fled the scene,” said Fitzgerald, citing the preliminary investigation into the shooting.
Fitzgerald credited the department’s Real Time Crime Center with helping patrol officers locate and apprehended the suspect, who was detained for questioning.
“Our patrol officers immediately began investigating this call. They were able to gain a description of the suspect with the help of the BPD Real Time Crime Center, we were able to track not only the suspect’s vehicle but the suspect himself at a nearby location,” Fitzgerald said.
The suspect, who was apprehended without incident, is being taken to BPD headquarters for questioning.
“We can’t point out just how crucial and how critical of a role that teamwork between our patrol officers and our personnel within the Birmingham Police Department’s Real-Time Crime Center played in capturing a murder suspect today,” Fitzgerald said.
The officer reflected on the brazen nature of the attack, and said authorities were grateful no one else was hurt in the crowded shopping center.
“Somebody opened fire at a gas station on Bessemer Road at 3 p.m. in the afternoon on a Friday in the summertime,” he said. “Kids are out of school its Friday people are getting off of work and someone chose to fire shots in one of the most crowded areas in Birmingham.”
