Man killed in blunt force attack in Center Point was ‘easygoing, always smiling’

A man beaten to death in east Jefferson County over the weekend is being remembered as an easygoing man who was always smiling.

Gemar Demetriece Hubbard, 54, died Sunday at UAB Hospital after he was removed from life support. Hubbard was assaulted Saturday night when he was visiting a friend at his Charter East apartment complex.

“He did not deserve to die like that,’’ said his niece, Denise Moss. “He wasn’t a fighter at all.”

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies responded about 9:45 p.m. Saturday to the 1500 block of Charter East Circle in Center Point on a report of a person down.

Sheriff’s spokesman Henry Irby said Hubbard was unconscious and transported to the hospital by Center Point Fire and Rescue.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said Hubbard was pronounced dead at 10:16 p.m. Sunday at UAB Hospital.

Moss was born in Pell City but moved with his family to Birmingham when he was in his teens and attended Phillips High School.

He worked at various jobs such as house painting, lawn maintenance and other general contract work.

“He was a non-confrontational kind of guy,’’ Moss said. “My uncle just wanted to go to the store, get him a drink, and work.”

“He was easygoing,’’ she said. “He just liked to have fun. When he was around, he always had jokes.”

Investigators have not released details surrounding the attack on Hubbard. Irby said no arrests have been made.

“The things happening with all the murders in Birmingham is really shocking to us,’’ Moss said.

“We want justice for our loved one,’’ she said. “We are not letting this go.”

Hubbard is the 65th homicide in all of Jefferson County so far in 2024.
