Man killed in barrage of gunfire in west Birmingham neighborhood

Shots rang out in a west Birmingham neighborhood Saturday afternoon, leaving one man dead dead.

West Precinct officers were dispatched shortly after 2 p.m. to the 1200 block of Fourth Avenue West in Birmingham’s Bush Hills community.

They arrived to find a young adult male unresponsive in the roadway close to the intersetion of 11th Street and Fourth Avenue West. Birmingham firefighters pronounced the victim dead on the scene.

The city’s gunfire detection system – Shot Spotter – registered 15 to 20 rounds in the 1200 block. “Calls started coming of shots being heard,’’ said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

Witnesses reported hearing the gunfire and said it appears a Glock switch was used, which police said is consistent with what they heard.

Fitzgerald said Shot Spotter picked up shots fired along a couple of blocks.

No arrests have been made.

The victim is Birmingham’s 25th homicide so far this year. Of those, three have been ruled justifiable and therefore are not deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County there have been 32 homicides, including the 25 in Birmingham.
