Man killed by sheriffâs deputies in Lee County
A man was shot to death by Lee County sheriff’s deputies on Friday night, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said it received a 911 call at about 10:45 p.m., reporting on a driver who was possibly intoxicated, traveling east on U.S. 280 near the intersection of Lee County Road 250 in the Bleecker community of southeast Lee County. The caller said a white Ford F-150 pickup truck had been swerving across lanes on the road and run into a ditch.
A deputy responding to the call found the truck in a ditch off Lee County Road 250 around 10:55 p.m., and saw a man in the truck who appeared to be asleep in the driver’s seat with a rifle in the seat next to him, the sheriff’s office said. Another deputy arrived on scene at about 11 p.m. The truck started to back out of the ditch, and a gunshot was fired at deputies from the vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.
The deputies returned fire at the driver’s side of the truck, the sheriff’s office said, and approached the vehicle as more deputies arrived. Emergency medical services were called when deputies saw the man had been shot, and he was declared dead on scene.
The man, who has not been identified, was found holding a handgun and had a semiautomatic shotgun in the seat next to him, the sheriff’s office said. The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the deadly incident.
