Man hits police officer in face with soda can, causes facial fracture

A man is in the Mobile County Metro Jail, charged with aggravated assault on a police officer after striking a Citronelle officer in the face with a full soda can, causing a facial fracture.

According to Citronelle police chief Michael McLean, an officer made contact with a suspect on Centre Street near Highway 96 near midnight Saturday. After making contact, the suspect became argumentative and refused to identify himself.

Carrying a full soda can, the suspect hurled the can at the officer from close range, striking the officer on the left side of his face. The suspect — later identified as Kyle Jamal Patton — fled the scene on foot.

The officer was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for an orbital bone fracture.

Several hours later, around 8:43 a.m., Citronelle officers located Patton on Augusta Street. Patton resisted arrest, but was taken into custody without further incident.

During the arrest, Patton was found in possession of two small bags containing a white substance which appeared to be methamphetamine, according to McLean.

Patton was taken to the Mobile County Metro Jail, charged with second degree aggravated assault on a police officer, attempting to elude a police officer, possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest.
