Man held on $3 million bond after chase ends in crash at Birmingham Citgo; drugs, guns seized
A Bessemer man is being held on $3 million bond after authorities say he led lawmen on a police chase, crashed at a Birmingham gas station and then was found in possession of illegal drugs and guns.
Bryant Lamar Robertson, 37, is charged with trafficking fentanyl, trafficking heroin, trafficking methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, felony fleeing and eluding, and certain persons forbidden to possess a firearm.
Shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday, the Jefferson County Vice and Narcotics Unit was in the Pratt City area following up on narcotics complaints.
Detectives were in a marked unit when they attempted to make a traffic stop on a Blue Ford Edge for failure to stop at a stop sign, said sheriff’s spokesman Henry Irby.
When detectives activated their emergency lights, the driver – now identified as Robertson – fled an pursuit ensued.
Robertson crashed at the Citgo at 3100 Ensley 5-Points West Avenue. One of the sheriff’s office SUV’s also crashed into one of the gas pumps.
Robertson was treated on the scene and taken to the hospital as a precaution. Irby said he did not have any visible injuries.
Both detectives were also checked out on the scene by medics, and again at a hospital.
Authorities seized 492 grams of methamphetamine, 18 grams of cocaine, 26 grams of fentanyl, 48 grams of heroin, and 18 grams of fentanyl/methamphetamine mixture.
They also confiscated two guns that had been reported stolen, five cell phones, three digital scales, baggies, a backpack and a fanny-pack.
“I am very excited that our deputies were able seize the dangerous drugs and weapons that were heading to the streets of Jefferson County,’’ said Sheriff Mark Pettway. “The complaints of our citizens have not gone unnoticed.”
