Man gunned down inside car in west Birmingham is city’s 100th homicide of 2023

A man was fatally gunned down inside his vehicle in west Birmingham in what police believe was a targeted attack.

The victim, whose identity has not yet been public released, is the city’s 100th victim this year.

Just before 10:30 p.m., the city’s gunfire detection system, Shot Spotter, alerted to police multiple shots fired in the 1000 block of Vinesville Road, near the intersection of Monte Sano Road.

While officers were en route, they were notified that a person was shot inside a vehicle. That vehicle was parked in the driveway of house.

Police found an adult male unresponsive inside the white sedan. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced the victim dead on the scene.

“We believe the victim was in the area (the driveway) when an unknown suspect fire shots into the vehicle, shot him and fled the scene,’’ said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

“We do think he was targeted,’’ Fitzgerald said.

It wasn’t immediately clear in whose driveway the victim was parked, but police said he was known to frequent the area where the shooting took place. Several family members and friends of the victim were at the crime scene.

Fitzgerald said no arrests have made, and a motive has not yet been determined.

The deadly shooting marks the city’s third homicide in four days and the 100th homicide of 2023. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and seven others have been ruled justifiable.

“I think the scary thing is we’ve had three homicides in four days that potentially could be capital murder cases,’’ Fitzgerald said. “Some cities don’t see three capital murder cases in an entire year.”

All three men killed since Saturday were inside their vehicles when they were fatally shot.

“I think it’s just a sign that we’ve got to get our city under control,’’ he said. “It doesn’t fall on the community 100 percent, and it doesn’t fall on the police 100 percent.”

“It has to be a joint effort,” Fitzgerald said. “People have got to start coming forward in these cases. We know they know something.”

“We need these people who have taken 100 lives off the streets,’’ he said.
