Man gunned down in strip mall parking lot on Birmingham’s 3rd Avenue West; at least 30 rounds fired

A man was found shot to death in the parking of a small strip mall on Birmingham’s west side.

An unknown person called 911 to report the shooting shortly before 12:30 a.m.

When officers arrived in the 1400 block of Third Avenue West, they found the victim face down on the pavement. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.

Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said there were multiple people in the parking when police first arrived, but they quickly scattered. A running vehicle was about 50 feet away from the victim.

Wade said Shot Spotter, the city’s gunfire detection system, alerted police at 12:08 a.m. to about 20 rounds fired a block away from where the victim was eventually found.

Officers responding to the Shot Spotter alert did not initially find anything at the location they were first given.

There were at least 30 shell casing markers surrounding the victim’s body. Wade said investigators believe the victim was targeted.

No one is in custody.

The victim, whose family members were at the scene, is the city’s 66th homicide this year. Of those, six have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.
