A 32-year-old New Market man has pleaded guilty to the 2017 shooting deaths of two Huntsville women and received two life sentences without parole.

According to court documents, Otis Preston Mayes pleaded guilty on March 31.

He was accused of the Sept. 11, 2017 deaths of Mary Louise Young, 59, and Mary Blevins, 77. Mayes lived in the same one block trailer park with Blevins.

Police said at the time of his arrest that Mayes shot Blevins, then walked to Young’s Halsey Avenue home, shot her, and fled in her Jeep.

Mayes later fled the wreckage of that car in downtown Huntsville and was spotted near the Huntsville Utilities building on Church Street. He was taken into custody carrying a handgun, police said.

Police then backtracked from the car to find Young, the registered owner.

Investigators believe he killed Blevins for $100 and some prescription pills.
