Man found shot to death on southwest Birmingham street
A man was found shot to death Wednesday afternoon on a southwest Birmingham street.
Birmingham police officers were dispatched just after 5 p.m. to a report of a person shot in the 1700 block of Laurel Avenue S.W.
Police arrived to find the victim unresponsive in the roadway on a dead end street. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Pronounced him dead on the scene.
Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said the preliminary investigation suggests the victim was involved in a verbal altercation with an unknown suspect before the fatal shots were fired. The suspect was gone by the time officers got at the shooting site.
A second person showed up at UAB Hospital a short time later. Wade said officers did not know if that shooting was related to the one on Laurel Avenue.
Multiple people gathered nearby waiting to find out of it was their loved one shot. They stood outside the yellow crime scene tape distraught, crying and praying as they awaited confirmation.
Police told them they did not yet have enough information to identify him.
The investigation is in its early stages and no arrests have been made.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 146 homicides including the 114 in Birmingham.
