Man found shot dead inside vehicle in east Birmingham neighborhood

A man was found shot to death Friday night in east Birmingham, the city’s second killing in just three hours.

East Precinct officers were dispatched just before 10 p.m. to a report of a person shot in the 7400 block Fourth Avenue South.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said officers arrived to find the victim unresponsive in a vehicle. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.

Fitzgerald said details are limited in the investigation. He did not say if the victim was in the driver’s seat or passenger’s seat.

No one is in custody.

The homicide happened just hours after a triple shooting in southwest Birmingham left one man dead, and two others injured.

The earlier shooting happened about 7 p.m. on Fourth Avenue S.W. near Goldwire Street.

The Friday night killings – the city’s first slayings in nearly two weeks – brings Birmingham’s homicide tally for 2023 to 81. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency, and seven others have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 113 homicides, including the 81 in Birmingham.
