Man found shot dead inside crashed car on Birmingham’s Second Court West

An investigation is underway after a man was fatally shot in Birmingham late Thursday.

Police were dispatched at 10:49 p.m. to a Shot Spotter call in the 1000 block of Second Court West.

When they arrived, they found the victim unresponsive inside a car that had hit a parked vehicle in the roadway.

The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.

Residents in the neighborhood said they heard about six shots.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said investigators believe the victim was driving on Second Court when someone opened fire on him. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the shooter was on foot or in a vehicle.

Fitzgerald said details are limited in the investigation.

The victim is Birmingham’s 118th confirmed homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency, and eight others have been ruled justifiable.

In all of Jefferson County there have been 164 homicides, including the 118 in Birmingham.
