Man found fatally shot in front yard of a west Birmingham home

A man was found shot to death late Tuesday in a west Birmingham yard.

A resident in the 900 block of Fourth Court West was leaving home for work just before 11 p.m. and noticed something amiss in a neighboring yard and notified police.

Sgt. Monica Law said police received a 911 call of a person down. When West Precinct officer arrived, they found the man unresponsive.

Law said the victim had sustained a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The city’s gunfire detection system – Shot Spotter – did not register shooting in the area, Law said. Detectives are canvassing the area to try to determine if neighbors heard or saw anything.

No other information was available, Law said.

The deadly shooting is Birmingham’s 13th homicide so far this year in the city. Of those, one has been ruled justifiable and therefore is not deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 16 homicides in 2023, including the 13 in Birmingham.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
