Man fleeing Birmingham traffic stop accidentally shoots self in knee, police say

An afternoon traffic stop in Birmingham ended with the driver shooting himself as he tried to run away from officers, according to police.

The incident happened before 3 p.m. in the northern part of the city.

Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said a North Precinct officer tried to stop a driver in the 4200 block of 29th Place North. The man got out of the vehicle and took off running.

As he was fleeing, Wade said, the armed man accidentally shot himself in the knee. He continued on, but was quickly captured.

The injured suspect was taken to UAB Hospital.

The officer did not fire any shots.

Wade said the incident was captured on the officer’s Axon dashboard camera.
