Man fired shots into Vestavia Hills apartment, kidnapped his 11-month old child, police say
An 11-month-old was kidnapped from a Vestavia Hills apartment Sunday evening by a non-custodial parent and was recovered a short time later in Birmingham, police say.
Vestavia Hills police responded at 6:20 p.m. to Grand Highland of Vestavia Hills apartment complex on Overton Road on a report of a possible kidnapping with shots fired, said Capt. Shane Ware.
Once officers arrived, they determined that the father – who does not have custody of the child – shot into the apartment before entering and taking the child.
The child was recovered a short time later in east Birmingham, and the father was taken into custody. Birmingham police assisted in the recovery of the child.
No one was injured, Ware said.
The father is being held in the Vestavia Hills Jail. His name is being withheld pending formal charges.
