Man fatally shot by Birmingham police ‘presented a knife,’ ALEA says
A man fatally shot by a Birmingham police officer was armed with a knife, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
Authorities on Tuesday identified the slain man as Daniel Allen Johnson. He was 43 and lived near where he was shot, which was the 700 block of 34th Street South in Birmingham’s Forest Park community.
Senior State Trooper Vu Quang said police responding to a report of a disorderly person encountered Johnson, who “presented a knife.”
The shooting happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. Monday.
A South Precinct officer was dispatched shortly to an apartment building in the parking lot of the neighborhood just off Clairmont Avenue.
Birmingham police Chief Scott Thurmond said when the officer arrived on the scene, an altercation ensued and the officer fired an undisclosed number of shots, critically wounding Johnson.
Johnson was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:18 p.m.
No officers were injured in the incident.
Court records show Johnson has previous convictions for resisting arrest and obstructing government operations.
It appeared, Thurmond said, that only one officer fired shots. That officer, who will be placed on leave as part of department policy, was wearing a working body camera.
The last fatal shooting by Birmingham police happened in February of 2022, when 27-year-old Keleen Rashad Connell was killed in the 4300 block of Morris Avenue in the Avondale area. That shooting was ruled justifiable by the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
“No officer wants to be involved in this situation so our officers work hard to see if there’s ways to deescalate or solve issues another way,’’ Thurmond said. “Unfortunately, sometimes officers are forced into situations where there are no other options and that appears that may have been the situation tonight.”
Once SBI’s investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
Johnson is Birmingham’s 74th homicide this year. Of those, seven have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 97 homicides including the 74 in Birmingham.
