Man facing trial in Tennessee in first wifeâs 2011 slaying charged with stalking 2nd wife in Alabama
A man awaiting trial for the 2011 death of his wife in Tennessee is behind bars in Alabama, accused of stalking his second wife who divorced him earlier this year.
David Glen Swift, 55, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail in Friday on a charge of first-degree stalking. He remained in jail Monday on no bond.
Jefferson County sheriff’s officials say detectives were able to find location information for Swift and determine he had been following his ex-wife, which included parking outside of her home at all hours of the night in western Jefferson County.
The couple married in Mobile in 2016 and separated in June 2022, according to court records. Their divorce was final in March.
Tennessee authorities are now working to revoke his bond on the murder charge.
“I’m very pleased with the hard work that our deputies put into helping this victim,’’ said sheriff’s Lt. Joni Money. “She was not even aware of the extent to which she was being followed.”
Swift was indicted last year on a charge of murder in the slaying of Karen Swift and is set to go on trial in Tennessee in that case in January 2024.
Karen Swift’s body was found Dec. 10, 2011, more than a month after the mother was reported missing that October.
Her body was found six weeks after she vanished and two miles away from her home in a cemetery.
The case was featured in Dateline’s Cold Case spotlight digital series in 2015, more than three years after she was killed. At the time, her husband was considered a person of interest because Karen Swift had filed for divorce three weeks before she disappeared.
Dyer County, Tenn. Sheriff Jeff Box said at the time of the indictment announcement that David Swift was the last person to her alive when she returned home from a Halloween party held at The Dyersburg Country Club at The Farms.
David Swift told investigators that he was the last person to see his wife the night she vanished, saying she had left a Halloween party early the night of October 29th, 2011 to pick up one of the couple’s daughters from a sleepover because the child was not feeling well, according to Dateline.
He reported her missing the following morning.
That same morning, police located Karen’s 2004 Nissan Murano a few miles away from her home. The SUV was abandoned with her Halloween costume inside, a tire was shredded, and Karen’s purse was missing.
The indictment was handed down in August 2022, and David Swift was quickly arrested in Alabama, where he had remarried and was living in Jefferson County.
“Today is a good day for law enforcement and I’m very pleased the grand jury returned an indictment against (David) Swift,” Box said when he announced the indictment. “We have literally spent thousands of hours on this case and a lot of that time was spent dispelling false information and rumors. Our investigators never gave up and just kept going through the evidence and I want to sincerely thank them for their diligence in this case.”
“The one thing that held true since the early stages of the investigation into Karen’s death was that David was always a suspect because all the evidence pointed to him,’’ Box said. “We were able to rule anyone and everyone else out involving this tragic murder and the grand jury made the right decision today by indicting him on a pre-meditated first-degree murder charge.”
David Swift was extradited from Alabama to Tennessee and bond was set at $200,000, at which time he returned to western Jefferson County .
