An Opelika man was killed in a single-vehicle accident in Lee County.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) identified the victim as 51-year-old Orlando R. Welch.

Senior Trooper Joshua Thompson said the crash happened at approximately 12:01 a.m. on Saturday on Lee County 145 near U.S. 280, approximately two miles west of Smith Station.

Welch was fatally injured when the 2002 Buick Park Avenue he was driving left the roadway, struck a stone column, and overturned. Welch was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing by troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division.
